Based on the best-selling French novel written by Gaston Leroux, the story line has been transformed into multiple versions of film and theatrical productions. The original book was released in 1909 (and the English version eventually came out in 1911). While it's now a best-selling book, it was very unpopular upon its early 20th century publications. While an early film version of Phantom premiered in 1925, Andrew Lloyd Webber brought the story into the spotlight with the 1986 musical. It became the most successful Broadway theater show of the twentieth century - outselling every other performance in modern existence. 'Phantom' continues to be a box-office hit today.
