Contrary to popular belief, the name of the group is not named after a band member. Their genre is not as clear-cut as the majority of other artists (example: rock, pop, hip-hop, etc). While improvisation was invented and first utilized by those in the big-band and jazz eras, this band has re-invented improv into the rock genre. Often referred to as a 'Jam Band', live performances are completely unarranged and uncoordinated. Even their recorded albums sound like a long, entertaining improv/jam session from someone's basement. Claiming earlier influences like Pink Floyd and Genesis, they have a wildly distinct progressive sound unmatched by today's other rock bands.
